PEOPLE
Russia is historically a multinational country, not only Russians live here, but also Belarusians, Tatars, Kazakhs, Ukrainians, Kyrgyz, Mari etc. There are 185 ethnic groups now living in 21 national republics (intended as homes to a specific ethnic minority), autonomous districts and areas. Four-fifths of the country’s residents are ethnic Russians, with Tatars and Ukrainians being the largest minorities. Ethnic Russians account for 81% of the entire population of the country. Russians belong to the East Slavic ethnic group who are natives of Eastern Europe.
Although the constitution of Russia recognizes Russian as the official language, the individual republics may declare one or more official languages. There is a lively minority language scene in most subjects of the country, with more than 1,350 newspapers and magazines, 300 TV channels and 250 radio stations in over 50 minority languages. Moreover, new legislation allows usage of minority languages in federal radio and TV broadcasting. Customs and traditions in Russia of different nationalities are carefully preserved.
